Mijenta Announces Second Symphony Barrel Release, An Eight-Month Aged High Proof Reposado

Mijenta, the award-winning, additive-free, sustainably produced tequila from the highlands of Jalisco, today announced the release of its second Symphony barrel expression, an 8-month aged Reposado. Bottled at 45% ABV, this limited edition showcases the terroir of the highlands complemented by rich, complex barrel notes that are unlike any other aged tequila.

Following last year’s release of Mijenta’s acclaimed Cristalino, Mijenta continued its Symphony Series to more deeply explore the elegance of barrel aging. Symphony Series No. 2 showcases an entirely new aspect of the incredible profile that tequila develops in these hand-crafted barrels.

“When we first experimented with Symphony barrels, we were amazed by the transformation that happened during the maturation process,” said Maestra Tequilera Ana María Romero, “For this second release, we wanted to showcase a different aspect of the impact of the barrel on the tequila, and I believe the higher ABV helps bring to life the nuances and flavors that are developed through the unique environment in the barrel.”

Mijenta’s Symphony barrels – casks whose staves each come from the oak forests of Minnesota, Missouri, Pennsylvania and Virginia – create a completely unique environment in which the spirit transforms and evolves, developing new and complex flavors as it interacts with the different pore structures, terroir and aromatics of each type of wood.

“I love thinking about the contribution of each forest, the fruity nuances of Minnesota, the maple and caramel tones of Missouri, Pennsylvania with its spicy notes, and Virginia with its nutty tones, united in one fantastic profile,” Romero added. “Having previously worked with each type of wood separately, I believe this barrel is the most perfect symphony of the forests that form the golden region of American oaks."

Using the cooperage’s proprietary method, the staves are toasted over a low burning “chaufferette” (heat) while being continually sprayed with water. This unique toasting method opens the pores and allows a deeper penetration into the stave, bringing soft and delicate aromas, elegance, and balance to the spirit. This toast releases the wood’s fruit flavors, along with a powerful aromatic bouquet.

Extremely well balanced, Mijenta’s Symphony Series No. 2 offers on the nose notes of cooked agave, vanilla, caramel and banana, complemented by hints of citrus fruits, herbs and almonds. On the palate, agave, vanilla, caramel and banana come through, along with chocolate, almond, mint and spices like cardamom and clove.

Romero continued, “The complexity, harmony, silkiness, and subtlety, along with the contribution of each forest, remind the nose of a touch of Baroque music in which 4 instruments produce melodies that evoke an era. Mijenta Symphony Series No. 2 is that harmony I always sought in a tequila, the notes of agave that will leave the senses with the history of its barrel aging."

“Jean-Michel Basquiat once said, ‘Art is how we decorate space, music is how we decorate time,’ and for Mijenta, we decorate time through shared moments and celebrations – and the Symphony Series is intended to embody that ambition,” said Juan Coronado, Co-Founder of Mijenta. “This is a beautiful expression that makes any moment a special occasion, whether you’re enjoying it neat or in a cocktail that calls for an aged spirit, like an Old Fashioned.”

With a color palate that pays homage to the Blue Weber agave, the design reinterprets the clean, refined and spacious aesthetic of Mijenta’s first Symphony Series release. This includes a golden calligraphy-painted silhouette of the mountain featured on Mijenta’s labels that captures the amber light of golden hour in the highlands.

And as with all Mijenta expressions, the packaging for Symphony Series No. 2 is fully eco-friendly. The bottle is made from recycled glass, the cap is biopolymer made from sugar cane fiber, and the box is made from FSC-certified cardboard.

Priced at $84.99 (750ml) Mijenta Symphony Series No. 2 will be available in the U.S. from March 10, 2025. For more information please visit www.mijenta-tequila.com and find the brand on Instagram and Facebook at @mijentatequila.
